. . . There Was the Pig

StationWagon's founding members were friends before we ever played in a band. In fact, it's a bit of a mystery how we ever started playing at all. One by one we picked up an instrument. It's been a strange convergence ever since. This page gives some of the history behind the Wagon.

One of the first bands was the Dead Pig, featuring the blistering guitar-work of Mike Otten (a.k.a., Delta Floyd, Spain Rodriguez). Now living in Hawaii (see below with sharks), Mike's legendary virtuousity inspired the Pig to master the art of hour-long, one-tune jams. With a heavy Hendrix influence, the Pig could rock loud and long into the night.

Stood Up Next to a Macy's ...

The Pig, and other pre-Wagon versions of the band, played a few small parties. Their biggest gigs, though, took place on a streetcorner in Union Square.

Playing to the crowd of tourists, shoppers, and street people, the Pig (with Spain leading the way) blazed through some of the loudest sets ever heard on the street.

It wasn't uncommon for a Union Square shopper to walk by the band at the start of Voodoo Chile, go shopping at Macy's, and come back to hear the same tune.

Long Time Gone

Damnit, They Did It ... They Really Did It

Known for a short while as Planet of the Apes, the band played a mix of cover tunes and original music. Soon, though, the originals drifted out of the set, and Planet of the Apes became a cover band. Our front man for this incarnation of the band was the incomparable Mr. Brian Bosque (seen in the photo on the right playing air mandolin).

Planet of the Apes highlight: Hmmmm. We'll have to get back to you on that one.

StationWagon Fact: Now living in San Diego, Brian's legacy carries on. After leaving the band, he came up with the name StationWagon.

Funky Chunky

Since some band members didn't like the name StationWagon, we did a few gigs as Chunky. Alas, this name didn't stick. Nothing better surfaced, so we went back to StationWagon. Hey, at least it's better than Dead Pig or Planet of the Apes. Isn't it?

StationWagon Fact: Elliott and Melinda joined the band during the Chunky era.

Wagon, Ho!

Well, that's a very brief rundown of where the Wagon came from. I'm sure there's a lot more history, but I can't really remember it. Plus, who the heck reads this stuff anyway.
